Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) ha vivido y trabajado en el rancho de su padre en Mexico toda su vida. A medida que el rancho se encuentra con dificultades financieras, Raul (Diego Luna) el hermano mas joven de Armando, aparece con su nueva prometida, la bella Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez). Parece que el exito de Raul como un hombre internacional de negocios resolvera los problemas de la hacienda, puesto que se ofrece a liquiedar las deudas en las que su padre ha incurrido. Pero cuando Armando se enamora de Sonia, y las relaciones de negocios de Raul resultan ser menos de fiar, el infierno se desata, ya que se encuentran en una guerra con el mas temido senor del narcotrafico en Mexico, el poderoso Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal).
